Established in 2022, our reporting radiographer programme offers the opportunity to spend one day a week with the SWITA reporting team, with teaching aligning with the content learners will undertake at university. We welcomed our first cohort of learners in 2023, supporting trainee reporting radiographers across the region through weekly virtual teaching sessions. These sessions are designed to complement the education delivered by higher education institutions, offering tailored support on more complex topics.
By reducing the need for one-to-one supervision and departmental teaching, the programme helps increase reporting capacity and accelerates the process of signing off competent trainees. All trainees who have participated in the programme to date have successfully passed their university OSCE exams.
Training programme feedback
If I was to do another reporting course I would without a doubt want to use SWITA training support.’’

Departmental leads: All departmental leads surveyed indicated they would be ‘’likely’’ or ‘’very likely’’ to use the SWITA training programme again, with one service lead commenting:
Training more reporters this way has enabled current reporters to focus on the reporting and not the supervision which has increased our reporting capacity and reduced outsourcing.’’

Community of practice
Launched in 2025, the South West Reporting Radiographer Community of Practice supports both trainee and qualified reporting radiographers across the South West region. Our dedicated educational platform offers upskilling resources, discussion forums and shared information such as job plans.
We also host virtual meetings every two months, featuring a range of topics including service improvement initiatives, teaching on complex pathologies and the review of interesting case studies.
