Peninsula FAQs

Academy-based training offers:

  • FRCR examination centre for part 1, 2A and 2B, minimising the requirement to travel to London to sit examinations 
  • The time within the Academy is spent in small group teaching, self-directed learning, simulation sessions and structured supported reporting 
  • Teaching led by consultants and healthcare professionals with protected teaching time
  • Moving teaching to the Academy allows for concentrated hands-on clinical experience in the clinical placements
  • Access to interventional simulation suite and ultrasound simulation suite, housing various phantoms and multiple simulation equipment including VIST® G7, BodyWorks Eve, BabyWorks, NeedleTrainer, ScanTrainer TA/TV 
  • By utilising the wide range of learning resources and simulator technology, resident doctors can acquire the knowledge and preparatory hands-on skills to make the most of their clinical attachment in an environment designed to learn
  • Outpatient ultrasound facilities are available within the building allowing for junior residents to undertake training lists or senior residents to provide training lists with full support available and longer appointment times
  • Dedicated Academy leads in education, research, leadership, intervention and ultrasound 
  • Attendance at educational events and guest lectures hosted at the Academy
  • Peninsula wide on-call

  • Employee coffee room with free tea and coffee provided
  • 106 seat lecture theatre
  • Conference room
  • Seminar rooms
  • PACS suite
  • Interventional radiology simulation suite
  • Ultrasound simulation suite
  • Mac suite
  • IT suite
  • Wellbeing/prayer room
  • Resident doctors rotate across several hospitals within the Peninsula region, including:
  • SWITA Ultrasound Hub (Taunton Diagnostic Centre) and Spoke (Musgrove Park Hospital)

  • South West Imaging Training Academy – Plymouth Education Centre
  • ST1 – Every other month plus every Monday (58.3%)
  • ST2 – Every other month (50%)
  • ST3 – Two months in a hospital placement, one month in Academy (33.3%)
  • ST4/5/6 – Three months during the year, six weeks of which can be spent on an external training placement (25%)

Academy Open Day 

The Academy holds an annual open day event in November.  This event is designed to provide insight into a career in radiology and offer practical guidance for the application and interview process. The event is primarily intended for resident doctors and medical students considering a career in radiology. Details will be advertised each year on our Study Days and Events page.
