The Severn School of Radiology is based in hospitals in and around Bristol. The Severn Radiology training programme is a full-time, five-year course starting each August. Upon successful completion, resident doctors are awarded a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Clinical Radiology.
The Severn scheme is a conventional radiology programme where from the start of ST1 through to the end of ST5, resident doctors undertake six monthly rotations in radiology departments across the region. This maximises resident doctors’ exposure to radiology and optimises their experience and practice as a radiologist.
Specialty training takes place in radiology departments approved for training by the Royal College of Radiologists, within the participating hospitals across the Severn region. Residents spend their rotations either within one of the two central Bristol hospitals or one of the district general hospitals (DGH) in the region. The central Bristol hospitals provide imaging support for tertiary services across all specialities, with DGH hospitals feeding into these if required, for example, multi-site multi-disciplinary team meetings.
Severn is one of the most competitive training schemes in the country and there is a high exam pass rate at all three stages of the FRCR exam. The majority of residents choose to stay in region for substantive consultant posts.
